How Crypto Payments Work on Proton
Open Proton billing from your account
Create or sign in to a free Proton account first, then open Proton's upgrade or billing screen to choose an individual, bundle, family, or business plan. Proton's Bitcoin option is not shown during initial sign-up.
Choose native Bitcoin or use SolCard
Inside Proton billing, you can pay directly with Bitcoin or enter a normal card. SolCard is the better fit if you want to spend supported crypto other than BTC or keep a card available for recurring web charges.
Finish the payment on proton.me
For native BTC, Proton gives you a one-time Bitcoin address and asks you to send the exact amount on the Bitcoin network. For SolCard, Proton processes the purchase through its standard card checkout and can reuse the card for monthly or annual billing.
Where SolCard Fits Proton's Billing Rules
Proton accepts Bitcoin directly, but only after account creation and only on the Bitcoin network. Its support guide explicitly says it does not support Lightning or any other blockchain for native crypto payments, so SolCard is the broader route when you want to spend other tokens.
Proton says Bitcoin cannot be used for automatic subscription payments and asks BTC users to pay at least 24 hours before renewal. A saved SolCard works better for Mail Plus, Proton Unlimited, Duo, or Family plans that you want rebilled on time.
Proton recommends subscribing on proton.me. Its payment documentation says iOS subscriptions may include a surcharge to cover Apple fees, and third-party app store purchases can follow different billing terms than Proton's own web checkout.
One Proton charge can unlock several services at once. Plans like Proton Unlimited, Duo, and Family combine Mail, Calendar, Drive, Pass, and VPN under one subscription, which makes SolCard practical when one web renewal covers your whole Proton setup.
Proton for Business offers a 14-day trial on supported plans, then automatically converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before the trial ends. SolCard can cover that normal card-based billing when the trial rolls into a live business plan.
If you move from one paid Proton plan to another, Proton converts unused time into prorated account credits for future payments. If you cancel, the subscription stays active until the end of the current term and then stops renewing.

About Proton
Proton sells privacy-focused subscriptions for encrypted email, VPN, cloud storage, password management, and business accounts. Real Proton purchases include Mail Plus, Drive Plus, Pass Plus, VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, Duo, Family, and Proton for Business plans bought through Proton's web billing pages. Proton already accepts Bitcoin directly after account creation, but that native flow is BTC-only and manual for renewals, so SolCard is most useful when you want to pay Proton's normal card checkout with other supported crypto or keep a reusable payment method on file.
Proton Payment FAQ
Yes. Proton says you can pay for any Proton subscription with Bitcoin after you create a free account and open the billing area. That native crypto flow uses account credits, works on the Bitcoin network only, and Proton's support article says Lightning and other blockchains are not supported.
